Spots On! 🐞
I was SO excited for when I saw the pitch for Miraculous Ladybug. Loved the tone, I loved the style—so when the studios involved decided to go for a shiny CGI look tilted at younger audiences instead of the moody anime style they’d initially considered, I was pretty disappointed. I tried watching a few episodes of the show, but it didn’t grab me like I hoped. But my good friend Marian was over the moon about it, so I drew her this piece as a gift. It actually started out as a hand-inked bookmark, which looked like this (drawn Jan 2018):

You can see that it changed a lot when I decided to expand on this piece! Swapping the orientation of her body somehow worked better and made the pose feel more dynamic. I added in the extra long hair ribbons as an homage to the earlier anime design for Ladybug that I’d loved so much.
Figuring out this piece took a lot of trial and error, but I’m glad I stuck with it. It gets a lot of love on social media, and I sell out of this print at every convention, no matter how many I stock.
